Making Volvo World Match Play Championship history

Finca Cortesin celebrated the prestigious honor of hosting the 2023 Solheim Cup—the first time Spain has ever staged the match between Europe and the United States. From September 18th to 24th, 2023, the resort welcomed the world's best female golfers to compete for the biggest team event in women's golf.

After three days of exhilarating competition, Team Europe retained the title by battling back in the final singles matches to tie 14-all, with Spaniard Carlota Ciganda holing the crucial putt on the par-3 17th and keeping the trophy in European hands for the third consecutive event. The historic draw was the first ever in Solheim Cup history.

Volvo World Match Play Championship Tournament History

2009

In 2009, under the helm of Volvo, the World Match Play Championship left Wentworth for the first time in its 45-year history and moved to Finca Cortesin.

With a new sponsor and venue came new qualification criteria and a round robin style group format, which proved a hit with the players, spectators, and media. England's Ross Fisher defeated Anthony Kim in a final that featured 11 of the world's top-ranked 30 players and 11 different nations.

2011

The 2011 editon brought the strongest field in the championship's history, with 24 players competing for an €800,000 first prize, including world numbers 1, 2, 3. Ian Poulter emerged victorious, defeating Luke Donald in a memorable final that showcased his match play prowness.

2012

In 2012, Nicolas Colsaerts joined the circle of champions when he captured the title in challenging, windy conditions in a close final against Graeme McDowell.
